"Irrstern" 2000

Marikke Heinz-Hoek

   1.  In the park of the hospital “Klinikum-Ost”: Granite slab, stainless steel, two parts, 2m x 3m

   2. In the foyer of the main building: Two screens.

The artist Marikke Heinz-Hoek created a two-part memorial for the victims of the NS psychiatry from Bremen. More than 2600 men and women from Bremen were forcefully sterilised in the clinic “Ellener Feldmark”, today the Klinikum Ost. More than 700 patients were killed in the context of the national socialist euthanasia program. The sculpture has the form of a table top picture frame and bears the word “Irrstern” (Ger. “Erring Star”), which is adapted from a poem by Friedrich Hölderlin. In the foyer of the main building of the clinic, a video installation is shown that consists of two plasma screens. The video stills show hands as well as portraits of euthanasia victims.
