Commissioned by the Senate of Bremen
The war memorial was inaugurated on the cemetery Buntentor in November 1871. It is dedicated to the six French prisoners of war who died in hospitals in Bremen. The obelisk is placed on a base and is made from sandstone from Oberkirchen.
Inscription on the front face:
Ici reposent on Paix les Corps de six soldats francais. Passant, inclines toi et rends hommage au courage malheureux. Dieu le rende aux tiens sur la terre étrangère.
(French: “Here rest in peace the bodies of six French soldiers. Passers-by, bow and honour the courage of the unlucky. God will repay it to yours who rest in foreign soil.”)
The three remaining faces bear the names, ranks and dates of death of the deceased.
