Memorial and plaque

Limestone from Jerusalem, 2.1m x 2.2m x 0.65m

The stone in front of the synagogue of the Israeli congregation in Bremen’s district Schwachhausen is untreated limestone from Jerusalem. In the upper part, remains of drill holes can be seen, which can be interpreted as traces of injury. The artist HAWOLI did the artistic consultation for the memorial. The inscription on the memorial plaque reads:

“In memory of the Jewish citizens of Bremen who were tortured, displaced or murdered in the painful years of 1933 to 1945, this stone from the Jerusalem mountains was erected (The parliament of Bremen, 1988)

Psalm 9.13 – ‘For He Who avenges blood remembers them; He has not forgotten the cry of the humble.’”
